Biography
Bernard has had a long involvement in education working in schools and universities both in Australia and abroad. He grew up in Canberra and completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree (with Honours) in 1991 at the Australian National University, majoring in History and Anthropology. In 1993 Bernard completed a Graduate Diploma in Education from the Australian Catholic University and a TESOL Certificate from Trinity College London in 1996. He holds a Master of Education (2007) and PhD in Education (2015) from the º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. His PhD was focused on digital technologies policies designed for Australian schools and the ethical implications of these policies. Bernard has a number of published articles in journals and book chapters. He is currently working on further research in the area of education policy and the impacts of Covid-19 on local schools. He is also the lead researcher on a major funded project aimed at increasing leadership capacity in local schools (2022-2023).
Bernard taught in several large secondary schools in the ACT and Tasmania and held the position of Curriculum Coordinator for many years. He also taught English as a second language in three countries in South America, Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina. He taught English in language institutes and universities. During his time in South American Bernard attained a high level of proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese and continues to take an interest in Latin American culture and education systems.
Since 2017 Bernard has taught a range of units in the Faculty of Education especially in the areas of education policy, leadership and the philosophy of education. He also teaches in the international Hangzhou Masters of Educational Leadership program. Over the last few years Bernard has undertaken a range of leadership roles in the Faculty of Education as Program Director in the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.
