This course will provide an introduction to the theory and practice of paper conservation. Topics covered will include the identification of a wide range of paper objects from documents to art on paper as well as the basics of paper conservation treatment.
(Note that this course is presented as a follow-on from the one day course ‘Preserving Paper Collections Part 1’ The courses are designed as a seamless whole with Part 1 aimed more at the management and preservation of paper-based collections with Part 2 looking more at the conservation of paper-based materials. Participants can choose one course that meets their needs, or attend both for a broader experience.)

Learning outcomes
- Develop a basic understanding of the variety of images on paper including inks and paints, art printing, commercial printing and document copying

Ian Batterham M App Sc, Materials Conservation
Lecturer in Heritage Preservation, º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ
Ian Batterham has been working in the conservation field since 1980. He has a master’s degree in Materials Conservation and is a professional member of the AICCM. He currently teaches in the Cultural Heritage Conservation stream at º¬Ðß²ÝÊÓƵ. Prior to his retirement he was manager of conservation at the National Archives of Australia. He has had many articles published on a variety of conservation topics as well as two books. His interests cover the conservation of all manner of paper-based objects as well as preventive conservation.
Course structure
Session 1
Images on paper
- Learn about the variety of printed images found on paper, what their makeup is and how they deteriorate
Session 2
Inks and paints
- Learn about the variety of artists materials and writing materials used to make documents and art.
Session 3
Basic paper treatment
- Experience a range of paper conservation techniques including washing, deacidification and mending
