Heartwarming stories, a re-interpretation of Bob Graham's The Red Woollen Blanket

Awarded the Bob Graham artwork

'The students created a digital blanket, woven together with images and beautiful poetry written by the girls. Their understanding of the story, framed by the theme 'letting go' was apparent. Using technology to present the photographs, and digitally record the girls reading their poems showed strong sense of reinterpretation and adaptation.

It was clear to the judges that the girls engaged strongly with the book, and had a lot of fun creating their own personal stories. Their inspiration was far reaching, including teddy bears, ballet slippers, a gingerbread man, and a hardworking mum.

This age group was also involved in the donation of red blankets to Anglicare. Bob Graham's lovely story The Red Woollen Blanket prompted the girls and their families to contribute to those in need, offering warmth and security. The blankets were presented to Anglicare for distribution during Book Week'.

The Red Woollen Blanket tells the story of the close connection Julia has with her red blanket.  A special blanket can provide physical warmth, but can also provide security and warm the heart.  In response to reading The Red Woollen Blanket, Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 students collaborated on a creative collection of poetry about objects that are dear to their hearts.

When discussing the Bob Graham story, students made personal connections, describing objects that they loved when they were younger, objects that still hold a special place in their hearts.  As a result, they were invited to photograph their special object.  The photographs were digitally stitched together to create a red blanket.  Children then enjoyed writing and recording poems about their objects, which were woven into the digital blanket – a blanket of 'Heart-Warming Stories'.

Heart Warming Stories told in a Red Digital Blanket

Reading 'The Red Woollen Blanket' prompted another heart-warming story, with many families choosing to contribute to a blanket appeal and donate a red blanket for people in need.  The blankets will play a prominent role in the Canberra Girls Grammar School Book Week Assembly, where they will be presented to Anglicare for distribution.
