This symposium will be of interest to all academics and students involved in Higher Degree Research (PhD and Masters by Research), as well as prospective students.
This is a free event and there will be catering.
Overview
This in-person symposium showcases First Nations Australian perspectives on, and experiences with, Higher Degree by Research study in Australian Universities.
We are delighted to announce that Professor Tracey Bunda, will open proceedings with a keynote address.
Across the remainder of the 2 days (September 28-29), there will be presentations, panels and yarning sessions that discuss research and supervision in the First Nations Australian space.
The final afternoon will include a Ngunnawal Cultural Tour (numbers are limited).
Topics to be covered include:
- Navigating cultural obligations;
- Culturally appropriate research methods and modes of thesis writing/production;
- Research temporalities;
- First Nations Australian ways of ‘being’ a researcher; and,
- Reflections on supervision and supervisory relationships.
Travel support: There are a limited number of travel bursaries available for travel for First Nations HDR students. Please contact the organisers at cccr@canberra.edu.au to register your interest in applying for the bursary.

Keynote address
The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Tracey Bunda. Tracey Bunda is a Ngugi/Wakka Wakka woman and the UQ Professor of Indigenous Education. She has an extensive three decade career in the university sector as a leader of Indigenous Higher Education. Her research and scholarly interests address the value of storying as methodology, power inequities in white institutions and Indigenous women’s leadership.
